CHAPTER FIVE
I went back to my room first before going into the bar. My skirt was dirty, my hands grazed, and a small gash on my forehead dripped blood into my eyebrow. I made the necessary repairs, changed into a fresh pair of trousers, and put on a long-sleeved blouse to cover my grazed arms. Then I sat on the edge of the bed wondering who had attacked me.
Almost anybody in the bar might have seen me heading for the winery and Hugh, Molly, and Roger were all somewhere about, either in the building or on the estate. Time to go in search of the owners.
The couple were deep in conversation in the restaurant, Hugh standing half in and half out of the door, his legs straddling the groove of the sliding glass door.
"I told you I wouldn't stand by and see this business ruined," Molly said, earnestly. "Do what ever you think is right. I just hope â"
What she hoped I was not to discover, for she broke off at sight of me and flashed a wavering smile.
"Can we help?" Hugh's voice was gruff.
For the moment I kept quiet about the attack in the winery. I was following an idea I'd had as I'd walked back to my room.
"Any joy with the radio?"
"Not yet. I've left the Major tinkering."
Mainwaring had spent his time in the army in the Royal Signals Corps and reckoned he could help. When he'd informed Hugh of this, the two of them had spent an hour fiddling with it before the Australian had left him to it, concerned with all the other tasks he had to do. Naturally enough, murder, fallen trees, and washed away bridges had thrown the Pendleton's normal schedule haywire, but why he was in the restaurant talking to his wife instead of getting on with things was something he didn't bother to explain.
"Did you help?" I smiled at Molly. "Sometimes a woman's touch can work wonders."
"Strewth, no. I've been in the kitchen until Hugh called me."
I nodded. "I actually wanted to ask you about your time in Australia."
"Thinking of moving there, are you? It's a great country."
"No, Hugh." Molly's hand plucked at his sleeve. "It's for one of Mrs Davenport's books. I think Verity is trying to find out who killed Mr Forbes."
Hugh's glance travelled rapidly back and forth between his wife and myself. "Whatever for?" he said. "That's the police's job. Besides, what does it have to do with Oz?"
If I heard just once more that I should leave it to the police, I would scream.
"Look, there's a murderer here. Don't you want them caught?"
"Well of course I do, but you gotta realise we have a business to run."
"Yes, and the sooner our killer is apprehended, the sooner you can get back to doing just that. Don't you see that it's in your own interests?"
"What if we, you, find out who the murderer is before the police know we need them? Then what?"
"I don't know." I shrugged at Molly's question, "We tie them up and put them somewhere secure.
